Summary: | In 21th century, energy consumption increase impact on increasing of CO2 emission that leads into global warming. One way to reduce CO2 emission is fixation. This research will be studying CO2 fixation using microalgae Botryococcus braunii which have short doubling time and can produce hidrocarbon potential for being alternative energy resources. The objective of this research is determining optimum condition for growth and hidrocarbon composition of Botryococcus braunii using CO2 gas.

Factors that influence growth and hidrocarbon composition of Botryococcus braunii are medium composition, concentration of CO2, ligt intensity, concentration of SOx, etc. Previous research have studied the effect of concentration CO2 and SOx to the growth of Botryococcus braunii. In this research will be studied effect of light intensity to the growth and composition hidrocarbon in the optimum condition that has been determined from the previous research.

The research will conducted in an air lift fermentor with medium Bristol volume 5 L, flow rate of air 0,0178L/s, concentration CO2 15%-v air, temperature 25 degrees C, and initial pH 7. Experimental variation is considering the effect of bright lighting. First, the microalgae will be given all day bright lighting, and second variation the microalgae will be given half-day brigt lighting. The result obtained are dry-cell weight and hidrocarbon composition from Botryococcus braunii. Dry-cell weight will be determined by using standard curve of dry-cell weight to the absorbance and composition hidrocarbon obtained from result of test using gas cromatography.

This research obtain that light period does not make this any significant difference biomass result as well as CO2 fixated by Botryococcus braunii. As a fact, the highest productivity of hydrocarbon production found in shorter light period because the production of lipid, that is oletic acid and palmitic acid, increase significantly. |
