(Rubiaceae) is a tropical plant which can be easily cultivated, however, its use in medication has not been widely known. Previous researches showed that the plant has antihypertensive and hepatoprotective activities. In this research, its phytochemical content was studied. The crude drug was extracted by Soxhlet apparatus using ethanol and the extract was fractionated by liquid-liquid extraction using n-hexane, ethyl acetate, and butanol. The butanol fraction was subjected to preparative paper chromatography using butanol-acetic acid-water (4:1:5), 50% acetic acid in aqueous solution, and aquadest. The isolate was examined for its purity by thin layer chromatography (TLC) using ethyl acetate-methanol-water (15:8:2) and was characterized by ultraviolet-visible and infrared spectrophotometries. TLC of those compounds using ethyl acetate-methanol-water (15:8:2) and visualized using anisaldehide in sulfuric acid spray reagent gave two blue spots with Rf values of 0.37 and 0.43. The isolate gave positive result against Trim & Hill reagent, which is specific for iridoid. <br /> text
