Although the concept of food security had been known since 1970's, but until recently, the fulfillment of food is still a major problem in various countries, including Indonesia. To solve the problem, Indonesia's Government have made food security planning with its programs, but has not been suceeded in realizing food security. Some opinions said that the failure in realizing food security caused by the tendency of food security planning which base on production and does not show interest in local factors. The importance of accomodating local factors also shown by some studies which indicated that some communities in Indonesia according to long standing custom, had used reliable local food system to secure the fulfillment of food and to overcome food insecurity.<p>The research aims at understanding how local factors influence local food security and its implication to food security planning. By employing qualitative method and ethnography study, empirical materials were generated through in-depth interviews with some members of communities which have reached food security.<p>The research shows some interesting facts about local factors that important and work to build local food security. Empirical findings show that local motivations to be sovereign and independent influencing people perception on food and give local food security. More over, these motivations urged them to use available resources in their surrounding environment, increasing their capability to learn and innovate, and give more attention to environmental conservation. The research suggests the need for interregional cooperation to achieve food security on a larger scale, increasing people capability and education so they can participate actively in realizing food security. text |
