Summary: | Since 2002, composite brake pad was introduced as an alternative for metallic brake pad for train's brake pad in Indonesia. The advantages of composites brake pad compared to metallic brake pad are lighter, longer life cycle, and better price to life ratio. In this final project, development of the production parameter and the making of composite brake pad prototype is done by using 0.775 kg/mm2 (1000 psi) of pressure, 170oC of temperature, and variations of pressing time between 40 until 100 minutes. Analysis to the prototype was done in order to identify the effect of pressing time to the cross breaking strength, crush strength and friction coefficient of composite brake pad.
The result of the analysis shows that cross breaking strength increases 34.9% from 24.14 to 32.56 MPa as pressing time increases from 40 to 100 minutes. Crush strength is not affected by the increasing of pressing time. Crush strength is still 58.7 MPa. Friction coefficient is not affected by production parameter, but it is affected by variation of composite composition, especially by friction modifier.
Prototype of composite brake pad that fulfills the specification from PT KAI about crush strength and cross breaking strength has been made successfully. However, the characteristic of the friction coefficient needs to be tested further by using the actual train velocities which are 60 km/hour. The recommended production parameters for composite brake pad are 0.775 MPa (1000 psi) of pressure, 170oC of temperature and 40 minutes of pressing time. |
