The glass plates were exposed for two, four, six and eight weeks at five different stations along the river. Station I is located upstream, and is surrounded by a natural area, Station II a rice field area, Station III a human habitation area, Station IV and V, which are located downstream are both surrounded by a mixed area of human habitation, rice fields and industries. The result of chemical analyses of several environmetal factors, such as dissolved oxygen, carbon dioxide, ammonia, nitrite and nitrate concentrations showed that the water quality of Cimahi River was relatively good in the upstream areas ( Station I and II). The water quality of the downstream areas (Station III, IV and V) tend to decrease due to organic and inorganic pollutants. A total of 66 species of periphytic diatoms had been found, comprising of 24 genera, 11 families, six sub orders and two orders. The total abundance of the periphytic diatoms toward the mouth of Cimahi River tend to decrease, whereas the species richness and indices of diversity (H\') of the periphytic diatoms ateach station tend to increase. At each Station, the total abundance of the periphytic diatoms tend to increase with time, whereas the species richness does not vary much, and the diversity indices of the periphytic diatoms tend to decrease. In relatively unpolluted areas (Station I and II) intolerant diatom species such as Achnanthes lanceolata and Cocooneis placentula are more abundant. However, in the polluted areas (Station III, IV and V) tolerant diatom species, namely, Gomphonema parvulum, Nitzsohia pales and Pinnularia braunii are more abundant. Using the SOrensen\'s coefficient of similarity (Ss) of the aggregation of periphytic diatoms at Station I differed from those of the four other stations (Ss < 0.75), and also holds true for those of Station II, IV and V. Whereas, the aggregation of periphytic diatoms at Station II and III and those of Station III, IV and V were similar (Ss ? 0.75). Multiple regression analysis ( tolerance 0.05, p > 0.95) showed that the distribution in space and time of each periphytic diatom species of the Cimahi River was differentially affected by several abiotic environmental factors. text
