Description
Summary:Reflection, refraction, diffraction and interference phenomena are one of optics topics in SMU/MA for physics learning which is very attractive to be studied. When a light incident upon a surface will in general be partially reflected and partially transmitted as a refracted rays. The refraction occurs when a light incident passes from one medium to another medium bends the light ray toward the normal to the boundary between the two media. The amount of bending depends on the indices of refraction of the two media and is described quantitatively by Snell's law.
In this final project, designed a simple instrument that can be used to explain the refraction caused by the boundary between the air and fluid to determine the indices of refraction of some common fluids by using experimental method. The indices of refraction obtained from the analysis data are : water 1,33, kerosene 1,47, cooking oil 1,47, premium 1,49, 30 % sugar solution 1,37, and 50 % sugar solution 1,42. The difference between the experimental result and literature is less than 8 % indicates that the instrument designed is good enough to support physics learning in SMU/MA.
