Summary: |
The basic need of toll highway users is seamless toll access, not only seamless along the highway but also easiness when users make a transaction in front of toll booth. On the contrary, most of the time toll booth is also considered as the cause of traffic jams along the highway for hundreds or even kilometers long. The traffic jams can be caused by several problems like transaction process in front of toll booth which is still done manually, it takes quite long time to process the transaction. Therefore, there is a need of toll highway access ticket which is flexible and offer better services to users such as simple access and fast transaction process.

This problem could be solved by developing automatic transaction system or known as Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) based on Radio Frequency Identification (RFID). By using this system, all toll booth transaction process are done electronically and automatically, where there are no need of toll booth operators to assign cards on entrance gate and to receive cards and toll payments on exit gate. There is no need a cash payment because all of conventional methods are replaced by electronic transaction in a form of both prepaid or postpaid. Besides, users will be more comfort by the time they pass toll booth either entrance or exit because they do not need to halt for transaction like present condition but just to slow their vehicles on the maximum allowable speed limit. This system can also give a simple toll highway management to do all services monitoring where the management could determine the volume of vehicles crossing and incomes from each toll gate or even every toll booth easily and quickly (real-time).

The research is done to analyze and design ETC system based on RFID which is used as access ticket on toll highway. The expectation are to solve problems occurred in manual process so it is eventually will give the advantage to both sides which are the users and toll highway operators.
