Synthesis of Naphtalene Sulfonate as Deemulsifier on Waste Lubricant and Characterization Using FTIR Technique

Lubricant is a hydrocarbon which can get from petroleum refinering. Lubricant mainly used to reduce metal friction, protection through corrosion, and a heat transfer. Waste lubricant usually contain of contaminant such as residue of combustion, metal particles from engine or from additive substances...

Lubricant mainly used to reduce metal friction, protection through corrosion, and a heat transfer. Waste lubricant usually contain of contaminant such as residue of combustion, metal particles from engine or from additive substances used. Base material of waste lubricant can be recycled, furthermore can be a commercial lubricant. Waste lubricant can be use again after several processes then added some additives and tested so that as a technique it is comply with certain spesification. One of which, is dewatering process, a process of separation emulsified water in used oil. The aim of this research is to get the optimal condition on the process of dewatering in used oil by breaking the water emulsion using Naphthalene Sulfonate solution in dichloromethane solvent. Naphthalene Sulfonate was synthesized through the reaction of naphthalene with Acetyl Sulfate. Characterization of synthesis using FTIR at wave number 1178.51 cm-1. IR absorbance spectra showed that naphthalene sulfonate had been succeeded. The parameter process studied in this research, consists of the effect of Naphthalene Sulfonate concentration and volume ratio of Naphthalene Sulfonate solution against used oil. Optimal time for the separation process is four hour with the concentration of Naphthalene Sulfonate 250 ppm and at ration of 4:6. Determination on the water content for every result was measured using FTIR with horizontal ATR Technique. <br /> text
