The Effect of Lignosulfonate Addition to the Characteristic of Sulfonated Polystyrene Membrane

One of the alternative energy source that has been developed is PEMFC (Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell). The most important part of PEMFC is the proton transfer membrane. Proton transfer membrane that commonly used for PEMFC is Nafion®, but it still has high cost. The aim of this research is to synthesize proton transfer membrane that has characteristic approach to Nafion, but with low cost. The raw material choosen for this membrane is polystyrene. The polystyrene has been modified with sulfonation, cross-linked with divynilbenzene, and then blended with various composition of lignosulfonate. The membranes were characterized with Fourier Transform Infra Red (FTIR), degree of swelling analysis, Ion Exchange Capacity (IEC), conductivity analysis (conductivity bridge), mechanical analysis (tensile tester), crystalinity analysis (XRD), and thermal analysis (TG/DTA). Thermal analysis results showed that the addition of lignosulfonate didn't give any changes significantly to the characteristic of polyblend membrane. Polyblend membrane with 10% lignosulfonate shows the highest conductivity and mechanical strength values. text
