Due to mining activities, the Grasberg pit gets much deeper and wider. It causes distance from the loading area to the dump area longer, so is the distance between the haul truck maintenance facility at M shop to the furthest dump location, and the response time to fix break down haul truck is much longer. This was caused by the fact that the haul truck operator or mechanic shall take the break down unit to the M shop, the only one built haul truck workshop at the Grasberg surface mine, if the haul truck could not be repaired on the location it is found brokedown. PT R increased the production target on 2008 due to higher copper, gold and silver prices on 2007. With no change on the total capacity of haul truk CAT 793, PT R sees the opportunity to reduce avoidable loss caused by travelling down time haul truk CAT 793 to M shop aimed to increase the utilisation and efficiency of the haul truck. In the year 2008, PT R built two maintenance facilties (quick fix maintenance) of the haul truk CAT 793. Improvement in utilization and efficiency of haul truck CAT 793 will hence enhance higher opportunity to haul the mined materials This final project analyses effectiveness of PT Freeport Indonesia decision to build two quick fix maintenance facilities to reduce avoidable loss due to travelling down time of the haul truck CAT 793 to Mega shop at the Grasberg by comparing the efficiency and utilisation data before and after the building of two quick fix maintenance facilities at the Grasberg surface mine, and provides appropriate recommendations to maximize the effeciency and utilisation of CAT 793 trucks. From the four business solution alternatives, wich are 1. if PT R did not build quick fix maintenance (QFM) facilities, 2. if only one QFM facility at KDL was build , 3. if only one QFM facility at Blitar was built, and 4. if two QFM facilities at KDL and Blitar were build, it indicates the decision to build two QFM facilities at KDL and Blitar is the best alternatif for PT R The evaluation result on the PT Freeport Indonesia decision to build two QFM facilities at KDL and Blitar is efective proven with higher results on increased utilisation, efficiency and availability of the haul truck CAT 793 (in 2008). The material moved can be increased to 144,355 tons, and the haul truck CAT 793 operation and maintenance cost is reduced US$ 93.485,54. Total benefit for PT R is US$ 4,950,843.01 in 2008. The success of these two QFM facilities usage depends on the consistency of all relevant parties to follow the haul truck unplanned down maintenance procedure. text
