General Chemistry course is one of the Common Preliminary Level courses every ITB's student has to attend. The subject of this research was ITB's fresh students in semester I. From the results of analysis of 2003-2007, there were still many ITB's students in first year that had the grade of General Chemistry that was under standard. The problems in this research were as follows: (1) What is the mastering level of General Chemistry course material of ITB's students in semester I? (2) What are common mistakes frequently made by the students in answering chemistry problems of mid-semester examination 1 in semester I? and (3) How to know the learning difficulties ITB's student experience in answering chemistry problems of mid-semester examination in semester I? In this research the problems of Mid-Semester Examination 1 in semester I from six faculties, namely, FMIPA, FTI, FIKTM, FTSP, STEI and SITH taken by 1732 students were analyzed with an analysis of essay test type that consisted of 4 items of problems.
