Leachate could become environmental problems as it contains high concentrations of dissolved organic matters, inorganic components, heavy metals, and xenobiotic organic compounds. In this research, magnetic properties and heavy metal content of leachate sludge and soil samples from two municipal solid waste (MSW) disposal sites near Bandung, West Java were studied. Through series of measurements and analyses, the information on magnetic mineralogy, magnetic grain size, grain shape and heavy metal contents were expected to reveal the source of magnetic minerals and heavy metals in leachate allowing the use of magnetic parameters as proxy indicators of heavy metal content in leachate. Sampling of leachate sludge was carried out in leachate ponds in both Jelekong and Sarimukti. In total, 20 leachate sludge samples were collected from Jelekong and 10 samples from Sarimukti. Ten soil samples from each site, Jelekong and Sarimukti, were also collected. The measured magnetic parameters include mass-specific low and high frequencies magnetic susceptibility, anhysteretic remanent magnetization (ARM), isothermal remanent magnetization (IRM), saturation of isothermal remanent magnetization (SIRM) as well as hysteresis parameters (Mr, Mrs, Bc, dan Bcr) on selected samples. The magnetic measurements were also complemented by XRD (X-Ray diffraction) and EDX-equipped SEM (scanning electron microscopy) analyses. Apart from the above measurements, the heavy metal content in selected leachate sludge and soil samples (ten samples of leachate and soil samples from each site) were also measured using an AAS (Atomic Absorption Spectrometer). The measured and analyzed metals are Mn, Al, Cu, Zn, Cr, Cd, Pb, Hg, As, Ni, Co, and Fe. text
