Phytoextraction of Cd (II) by Vigna radiata (Mung Beans) grown in Hydroponic medium

Cadmium (Cd) is a metal frequently used in various industrial process. Unfortunately, Cd is dangerous to almost all living creatures. The increasing of Cd causes escalating contamination on soil and water. The recently technique used to remedy Cd contaminated soil is phytoremediation. In this resear...

Unfortunately, Cd is dangerous to almost all living creatures. The increasing of Cd causes escalating contamination on soil and water. The recently technique used to remedy Cd contaminated soil is phytoremediation. In this research, phytoextraction is used to remedy cadmium (II) contaminated water. The plant used as accumulator is mung beans (Vigna radiata). The results showed that Vigna radiata still able to grow well until the 12nd days on the medium contains 5mg/L of Cd (II), then withers. The results of Cd (II) analysis with atomic absorption spectroscopy revealed that on the 12nd days, V. radiata ould extract 95.5% Cd (II) from the contaminated medium. The SDS-PAGE on Vigna radiata biomass grown on Cd (II) contaminated medium showd that this plant secrete a new protein of 64 kDa. <br /> text
