Summary: | Timika Environmental Laboratory (TEL) is laboratory operated by PT FGH to analyze all samples collected within PT FGH's project area in order to meet all requirements in the Environmental Impact Analysis or AMDAL Regional 300K (ore production of 300,000 tons/day) which was approved in 1997. TEL has been maintaining the accreditation from BSN (The National Standardization Agency of Indonesia) since 1999. Main issue for the TEL is the turnaround times of sample less than 2,4 weeks have never met the PT FGH's management target of 80%. The main trigger for the issue is the increase of single parameters analyzed by TEL, where the increase every year is around 9%. Other issue for the TEL are the capacity of laboratory is never been assessed. This will make difficult to determine whether the utilization is higher or lower than maximum capacity. Operations management methods applied to improve the turnaround time of TEL are development process mapping, calculation of cycle time and throughput time, capacity assessment and root cause analysis using Current Reality Tree. Root causes analysis focused on capacity and inefficient process have identified several main root causes of longer turnaround time of analytical reports, which were imbalance manpower distribution, scheduling of incoming samples, solid samples pretreatment, QA/QC processes, no integration among instruments and manpower capabilities. Based on capacity assessment, TEL still has both instrument and manpower to analyze incoming samples. Proposed business solutions to meet the target of turnaround times are more balanced manpower distribution, improvement for solid samples pre-treatment, systems to reduce typo error, improve the QA/QC processes, integration among instruments and mechanism to improve employee's capabilities. One main solution to improve the productivity is the implementation of Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) for TEL. <br />
