Description
Summary:Starch industries and their derivatived products have important application for human life, especially in beverage industries. One of these derivatived products is sugar, namely starch sweetener. The starch sweetener is produced using starch hydrolysis with acid or enzyme. Hydrolysis process using acid is carried out at 140-160 oC and pH 1.8-2.0 and many conventional sugar industries applied this method. However, modern sugar industries use enzymatic processes to hydrolyse starch, because this process has several advantages including (a) operation is performed at not extreme temperature and pH, (b) little waste product, (c) easy-to-control operation, (d) high starch conversion. However, these enzymatic processes have numerous disadvantages, such as (i) high evaporation load due to low starch concentration, (ii) no enzyme recovery, (iii) requires product separation, and (iv) low productivity. To overcome disadvantages above, a novel technology named enzymatic membrane bioreactor (EMB) need to be developed. The EMB have advantages such as: (i) lower energy consumption, (ii) more efficient enzyme utilization, (iii) shorter hydrolysis time (iv) lower product purification load. All of them have a positive impact on the reduction of production cost. Because of these positive impacts, synthesis and characterization bioreactor using PS-PMMA composite membranes as supports were carried out in this study.
