Inventory functions to serve some interests of the company's operations so the company can run smoothly. One of the problems that generally occur in the inventory management is the discrepancy between supply and demand. This is also experienced by PT. XYZ, Tbk, one of the largest consumer goods in Indonesia.
Specifically, the discrepancy between supply and demand occurred in one of their business units, namely Hair care category. The problem has become more complex because it is also related to the space of a storage location of the inventory, namely: warehouse. This is because the inventory being managed includes 45 Stock Keeping Unit (SKU).Furthermore, the combination of both these factors result in three Undesirable Effects (UDE's), namely: the amount of packaging materials (PM) exceeds warehouse capacity, stock out occurs occasionally, and the layout of packaging materials that is less organized and often results in difficult process stock.
By using Current Reality Tree (CRT), there are 12 root causes that can be identified. However, only four of these root causes are in the context of discussion of this final project, namely: there is no identification of the nature of the use of PM, there is no reference about how the PM stocks must be maintained, the layout of the PM using randomized storage method, and warehouse capacity is only enough to meet during the activity in less than 3 days. An important note for warehouse capacity, during this research project, is that the company is in progress of expanding its warehouse capacity.
Solutions proposed to overcome the three root causes above, are: classification based on the nature of the use of PM through the ABC approach, the reference value of the min-max must be maintained, and the use of dictated near class-based methods.
