ISOLATION AND CHARACTERIZATION OF FATTY ACID DERIVATIVE COMPOUND FROM LEAVES OF SALIARA (Lantana camara L.) PURPLE FLOWER VARIANT IN HEXANE FRACTION

Lantana camara L. is commonly known as wild bushes grown and cultivated at subtropical and tropical region. The species is known to be toxic to grazing animals causing the damage to liver and brain. The literatures stated that this species is one of ten poisonous weeds in the world. The leaves ha...

The species is known to be toxic to grazing animals causing the damage to liver and brain. The literatures stated that this species is one of ten poisonous weeds in the world. The leaves have strong smell and the flower has various colors from white, yellow, pink, orange, red and purple. L. camara has been used as a traditional medicine. It contains many compounds (about 130 compounds) with various bioactivities. One of the compounds is fatty acid derivative compounds that can be found as free compounds or associated with other compounds.
This research conducted the isolation and characterization of fatty acid from leaves of L. camara (purple flower variant). The extraction of L. camara leaves was carried out using maceration process with methanol as solvent and then the solvent was evaporated to get crude extract. The fractionation of crude extract used n-hexane as solvent and then the solvent was removed from the crude extract. This fraction was separated and purified by column chromatography with silica gel G60 as stationary phase and n-hexane : ethyl acetate = 2: 1 as eluents. The isolated product is pale yellow solid which decompossed at 156oC.
text
