Summary: | Gemini surfactant having potential to be used as the corrosion inhibitor have been synthesized from Na2EDTA using microwave assisted organic synthesis method (MAOS). Reaction was carried out in two steps; the formation of ester bond and methylation reaction of tertiary amine group. Two different alkyl group of ester used, that are hexyl or C6H13 (SG I) and dodecyl or C12H25(SG II). The structure of synthesized gemini surfactant has been confirmed with the infrared spectrum which indicated the formation of ester bond (1699 cm-1) and the elimination of hydrogen bond (3300-3500 cm-1). Quantitative analysis test proved that all of tertiary amine have been transformed to ammonium, NR4+. Based on DTA/TGA, it reveals that the thermal stability of SG II is lower than SG I. Corrosion inhibition test of gemini surfactant and Na2EDTA toward carbon steel corrosion on 1% NaCl and saturated CO¬2 using EIS method showed that the ability of SG I and SG II to inhibit corrosion increased as the increase in the concentration of inhibitor and temperature. All of them obeyed Langmuir adsorption isotherm with the value of AGads are -17,8 kJ/mol, -18,2 kJ/mol, and -39 kJ/mol, respectively. SG II can reduce corrosion level better than Na2EDTA. <br />
