Development of Polystirene Divynilbenzene-1-(2-pyridylazo)-2-naphtol Modified Carbon Paste Electrode for Voltammetric Analysis of Pb(II) Ion

Anodic stripping voltammetry is one of heavy metal analysis techniques which is recognized to have high sensitivity. This technique is ten to one hundred times more sensitive than atomic absorption spectroscopy technique and has detection limit down to the level of nanograms per liter. In this study...

This technique is ten to one hundred times more sensitive than atomic absorption spectroscopy technique and has detection limit down to the level of nanograms per liter. In this study carbon paste electrode was made with the addition of resin polystyrene divynilbenzene-1-(2-pyridylazo)-2-naphtol (PSDVB-PAN) as modifier. This electrode will be used to analyzed Pb(II) voltammetrically. Optimum condition that produce highest current was obtained by varying electrode composition and solution acidity. The performance of the electrode was characterized through repeatability, percent recovery, and linearity of calibration curve. It was found that the optimum composition of PSDVB-PAN was 5%. Optimum signal was obtained in acetate buffer of pH 4.5. Standard deviation of repeated measurement was 3.73% showing good precision. Percent recovery of spike sample analysis was between 97.98-102.30% showing that the method has good accuracy. The method has a good sensitivity with detection limit of 4.58 ppb. The electrode had been tested for the analysis of lead content in gasoline and the result had been compare to those of AAS method. <br /> text
