Summary: | If the increase of load happen on foundation and slope, this condition will give posibility large deformation in this structure, which ussually will make earth failure. this failure happen due to the shear stress from the load larger than ultimate strength of the earth. A lot of research has been done to study these causes and shown that average shear strength during failure always smaller than the peak strength. The mean purpose of this thesis is to study about the behaviour of shear strength for the sand, which have the various of relative density and various gradation by using the direct shear with the large shear box (diameter 12.60 cm). The selection of direct shear test with large shear box is ti give the value of residual strength. From evaluation and analitical of the data collecting during this study show us that the shear strength of sand influence by the value of relative density, if the relative density increases will increases the peak strength, but the value of residual strength have not influences by the relative density. The residual shear strength will happen if the value of has been constant and the of the specimen has been constant also, and this will happen at large shear displacement. For dense and medium sands, the volume of the speciment initially decreases and then increases with shear displacement. At large values of shear displacement, the volume of specimen remains approximately constant. For loose sands, the volume of the specimen gradually decreases to a certain value and remains approximately contant there after. |
