Description
Summary:Until now styrofoam is still common used for electronic packaging because it is cheap and can protect electronical device. Waste from styrofoam make new problems at environment because it is difficult to be decomposed naturally. This Research is designed to obtain membrane that can be used as electrolyte membrane for Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell (PEMFC), with starting material of polystirene that obtained from styrofoam waste. This was focused on the influence of sulfonation time in PS (Polistiren) on characteristics of membrane. Sulfonation times that used at this research were 10, 20, 30 and 40 minutes. PSS and polyblend of PSS-lignin membranes were analysed with FT-IR, proton conductivity, ion exchanger capacities, swelling degree, mechanical characteristic, and thermal characteristic. Research results show that the addition of lignosulfonat improves the conductivity of membrane, and the most optimal sulfonation time is for 40 minutes.
