The subject of this research is new students of ITB semester II in academic year 2007/2008. In this research it has been carried out an identification to the error in the essay problems of Semester Middle Test (UTS II) semester II consisting of 4 essay problems, chemical kinetics, nuclear chemistry and coordination compound chemistry. From the analysis result in the year 2003 to 2007 there were many first-level students of ITB obtaining the relative low grade of Basic Chemistry. This research has been carried out by (i) tabulating the essay problems and the outcomes obtained by the students, (ii) inventorying difficult problems and general errors conducted by the students, (iii) exploring the literature for gathering the efforts to build the identified errors. text
