Summary:<p align="justify">In highly competitive global situation, developing innovative product becomes a strategy for firms to maintain their core competitiveness. However, many firms or businesses do not have all the resources to develop and manufacture an innovative product. To overcome this problem, firms work collaboratively with outside sources within a design chain. Collaboration within a design chain lead to a right partner selection since partner selection is one of successful factor for product development success. Partner selection itself is closely related to selection criteria and decision making process due to uncertain, imprecise and incomplete information. The objective of this research is developing a partner selection method for long term collaboration within a design chain. The selection method then tested to a proper case study so the decision making process can be evaluated based on performance score of candidate partners due to the absence of relevant information. More over the flexibility of the method can be evaluated through normal, pessimistic and optimistic situation. The partner selection method is developed from a partner selection model in design chain proposed by Wang and Lin (2006). Fuzzy set theory is used due to the inability of decision maker to express his preferences of candidate partner's performance score precisely. It is difficult to evaluate some of the criteria and arrive at a quantitative value. Fuzzy rating of candidate partner is managed objectively by fuzzy group decision making through rating model. Linguistic protocol for fuzzy rating and utility method are developed so expert could rate the opinion through the decision making process. Multi criteria outranking model for long term collaboration which consists of 5 (five) sub model is developed based on selection criteria within design chain. The output of each sub model is a score of candidate partner based on the defined selection criteria. The evaluation of model results in performance score of overall candidate partner. The score then used to select the suitable partners in optimization partner selection model. Selected partner get by solving the optimization model with linear programming. The performance score of candidate partner represents their performance in long term period so the selected partners are potential partners for a better collaboration results in the future. The developed method is flexible in normal situation, pessimistic or pessimistic criterion. It helps decision maker in selecting the right partners within several possible situations range from worst to best.
