Summary: | The digital divide between rural and urban is still wide. Therefore, it requires penetration of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) to narrow this gap for the rural development. The characteristics of rural communities which tend to live sparsely in cluster called Dusun and spaced with a relatively far distance, small economic scale with low level of education need a selection of technology suitable for that condition.
In this research, Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) 802.11 standard with Wireless Distribution System (WDS) backbone technology has been selected to interconnect between the clusters. For the implementation of the rural ICT, test and measurement has also been conducted to evaluate the performance of the system. Based on comparison studi on some Wi-Fi Access Point routers (AP/router) in the market, Linksys WRT54GL with IEEE 802.11g standard has been chosen due to low price and use of unlicensed 2,4 GHz frequency band. This AP/router is then upgraded with DD-WRT firmware which supports WDS to extend its range.
