Description
Summary:It has been recognized that aluminium are the second after steels consumed in the world. An appreciable number of elements, serve as supplementary alloying additions for improving alloy properties especially wear resistance and high temperature strength for broad range of uses such as vehicle industry, aircraft, boats, aerospace, architectural, building construction and electric conductors. Fe and Ni serve as supplementary alloying additions for improving alloy properties to increase strength, hardness and resistance to wear for elevated temperature. Nickel and iron present in aluminum appear as hard intermetallic second phases in combination with aluminum, such as Al3Fe and Al3Ni. These phases improve alloy properties such as strength and hardness. No ternary phases were reported in Al-poor region or Al < 50% at. In the Al-rich region three stable ternary phases were revealed. The phases Al9FeNi, Al10Fe3Ni and Fe5Ni24Al71. This study is to investigate variation microstructure characteristics when ferronickel is introduced into relatively pure aluminium. The high purity aluminium ingot was obtained from PT. ABC, while the ferro-nickel was the low-carbon FeNi shots of PT. XYZ. The alloys were produced by melting the aluminium in an electric furnace at 750oC and addition of FeNi in the molten aluminium for about 180 minutes. The microstructural characteristics are investigated in this study using optical and electron microscopes. The microstructure of the alloy samples show that most of the alloys have dendritic structure, except alloy 98.17Al 0.69Fe 1.14Ni that indicates peritectic structure. Three phases were found, Al3Fe, Al3Ni and Al9FeNi. The phase was found increase the strength of the alloy. The alloy 96.41Al-1.34Fe-2.25Ni has the highest microhardness Vickers number with 75.5.
