Description
Summary:The intention of this study is to map the spatial distribution of sediment characteristic. The map will be related to erosion and current monsoon system. The study area is situated in a coral cay of Semak Daun reef platform. Samples of sediment are collected at East Monsoon period. Evidence of erosion is visually documented. It is found that the sediments across the coral cay and reef platform are substantially sand with representative size (d50) of ranging between 0.17 and 0.56mm. Most of reef platform and coral cay samples contain sand fractions of more than 90%. Samples with 5% gravel are seen in the reef flat. Sample with 70% mud is found in the reef 'lagoon'. This suggests that higher level energy leading to erosive agent prevails across reef flat, whereas reef 'lagoon' seems to be the depositional features on the reef platform. The coarsest sediment representative size with smaller range of sediment size is found in the North transect of the cay and suggests that this particular site experiences high and more uniform energy level with respect to the other sides of the cay. Existence of gravel portions in the sediment samples on the East side of the cay indicates that even greater energy prevails. Evidence of erosion is found to be located in sites where coarser sediment is sampled.
