Heavy vehicles (HV) and motorcycles (MC) are significant part of traffic and their influence under saturated conditions may not be constant in terms of pcu for various prevailing conditions.

The objectives of this study are to analyze passenger car equivalents (pcu) for heavy vehicles and motorcycles that make a right turn in unopposed saturated traffic conditions at various approach widths, turning radii and flow compositions.

Observations were videotaped during the morning, midday and afternoon peak periods at ten approaches of four signalized intersections in South Bandung, and analyzed in the laboratory. A total of 151 cycles were accepted for analysis and these were divided in five second time slices.

Saturation flow for the unopposed right turn movement was obtained by analyzing a series of time slices which contain only passenger cars, but ignoring the first slice to isolate the influence on the flow from other vehicle types. The minimum saturation flow is 1851 pcu/hour (for M. Toha intersection) and the maximum is 2095 pcu/hour (for north approach of Kiaracondong intersection). Further analyses show the mean pcu values for HV's and MC's are respectively 1.57 and 0.40 compared to 1.00 for a right turning car. Lane widths and turning radii within the range of observations significantly influence the obtained pcu values for HV's tend to decrease, but neither do MC's. At a HV in this range is too small to support confidence levels, and so is the database for MC in this range.

The study suggests to do analyses on a larger database with coverage of the full range of vehicle compositions.
text
