Beside of its own geographical condition, Batam also implements 150 kV high voltage transmission, which structure is high, to transfer electric power on short transmission lines. Its exposed structure and high Ground Flash Density (GFD) make the transmission lines have been struck by lightning flash, causing lightning-correlated outages.<p>Improvement of its lightning protection system includes study of tropical lightning characteristics. Parameters of the tropical lightning are then used to evaluate lightning performance of existing transmission lines and after that, various improvement can be determined. The improvement can take conventional methods and special methods. Conventional methods used to improve lightning performance are ground resistance reduction, overhead ground wires addition, shielding angle optimization, insulation addition, and lightning arrester optimization. Further, improvement by special methods is implemented if conventional methods have not met a desired lightning protection level yet. Special improvement that is chosen for Batam case is an extra protection system by extended mast terminal (EMT). EMTs are prioritized to be installed at region with high GFD and at several incoming lines to station. text |
