Immune deficiency will cause human body more susceptible to disease. Lantana camara and Petiveria alliacea have been used traditionally to treat tuberculosis; however, there is no data on their immunomodulatory effect. In this study, immunomodulatory effect of water extract of these plants were determined against nonspecific and specific immune responses. Effect on non specific immune response was studied by carbon clearance test, organ index determination, and determination of NO concentration produced by macrophage. Effect on specific immune response was studied by measuring total antibody titer and delayed type hypersensitivity (DTH) reaction. Zymosan A was used as a standard for nonspecific immune test and lipopolysacharide (LPS) for determination of NO concentration produced by macrophage. Petiveria alliacea extract at doses of 15, 30, and 60 mg/kg body weight and Lantana camara extract at doses of 20 and 40 mg/kg body weight stimulated reticuloendothelial system with phagocytic indexes of 1.51; 1.93; 2.08, respectively for Petiveria alliacea; 1.13 and 1.24 for Lantana camara. Lantana camara at a dose of 40 mg/kg body weight increased thymus and liver indexes significantly (p<0.05). Petiveria alliacea extract at a dose of 15 mg/kg body weight and at concentration of 1 and 10 mg/mL stimulated significantly (p<0.05) NO production. Lantana camara extract at tested and concentrations did not stimulate NO production by macrophage. Petiveria alliacea at a dose of 60 mg/kg body weight and Lantana camara extract at doses of 10 and 40 mg/kg body weight increased secondary antibody titer and only at a dose of 15 mg/kg body weight increased cellular immune response significantly (p<0.05) determined by delayed type hypersensitivity reaction. text |
