Description
Summary:Location of study area at Pit J, PT Kaltim Prima Coal. The study area was located in Pinang area, Sangatta District, East Kutai Regency, East Kalimantan Province. Geographically the study area lies between 00 32' 53.5'' - 00 34' 26.3'' North Latitude and 1170 30' 58''– 1170 33' 09'' East Longitude, and regionally include in to the northern part of Kutai Basin. Coal seams in study area there are at Satuan Batulempung is part of Balikpapan Formation Middle Miocen – Last Miocen, it is one of the coal bearing formation on Kutai Basin. Coal seams at Pit J from old to young are Seam JR, Seam BE, Seam E2, Seam ML and Seam L1. Mining coal area at Pit J divided into north block mining area and south block mining area. Lateraly quality coals at study area is different between north block and south block. Sulfur content on coals at north block is high sulfur, on the ofter hand, coals at south block is low sulfur. Ash content on coals at north block is higher than south block and the calorific value of coals at north block is lower than south block. This study was carried out to determine the relation between coal sedimentation environment in relation with coal quality variation at Pinang area. Rank of coal seams in study area are High Volatile B Bituminous, according to the ASTM classification, the calori value is 13.127,975 - 14.055,809 Btu/lb (dmmf). Based on analysis of maceral composition with used coal sedimentation environment model from Diessel (1986), it can be interpreted that coals at the study area were deposited on lower – upper delta plain environment.
