Summary:Preliminary study of chemical content of the bark of "Johar" (Cassia siamea Lank., Caesalpiniaceae) showed the presence of alkaloid, flavonoid, tannin, quinone and steroid/ triterpenoid. Iron, magnesium, copper, zinc and calcium were found in the ash of the bark. Separation was done by liquid-liquid extraction, vacuum liquid- and centrifugal thin layer chromatography. Four compounds were isolated from the ethanol extract and by mass spectrometry, nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometry and infrav red spectrophotonetry, were identified as 2,4-bis(dinethylbenzyl)-6-t-buthylphenol, chrysophanol, lupeol and taraxasterol.
