ANTIMICROBIAL ACTIVITIES OF ETHANOL EXTRACT OF KETAPANG (TERMINALIA CATAPPA L.) BARK

"Ketapang" (Terminalia catappa L.) had been widely used as a folk medicine. Antimicrobial activity of "ketapang" bark had not been reported. The aim of this research was to investigate antimicrobial activity of ethanol extract of "ketapang" bark. The bark was extracted by refflux method, using ethanol as solvent. The extract was fractionated by liquid-liquid extraction method, using n-hexane, chloroform, and ethyl acetate as solvents. Antimicrobial activity was tested by agar disc diffusion method. Dried crude drug ethanolic extract of "ketapang" bark showed antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Candida albicans with minimum inhibition concentration (MIC) of 200 ug/disc and 300 µg/disc, respectively. The ethyl acetate fraction had highest antimicrobial activity against S. aureus and C. albicans with MIC of 50 ug/disc. A microgram of ethyl acetate fraction was equivalent to 1.27 x 10-3 ug tetracycline hydrochloride and 2.1 x 10-4 ug ketoconazole, respectively. Antimicrobial activity of dried crude drug was higher than that of fresh crude drug ethanolic extract. The ethyl acetate fraction had highest antimicrobial activity and all fractions showed lower activity than standard antibiotics. <br />
