It is caused by more companies and institution using computer network as its information system base to support its activity. Connection failures of personal computer to access an address in network system or internet are happened very often. This failure sometimes causes an unoptimal work condition of user. The failure of connection can be caused by hardware of software problems. The most frequently problems occur in personal computer to acces the network is TCP/IP which is the main protocol used in network application. To overcome this problem, user which not familiar with the characteristics of computer network have to consult network administrator. But, the failure occurred is very often caused by simple problems in TCP/IP that can be solved by the user without advices from network administrator. In this thesis an expert system to diagnose the failure in TCP/IP connections is designed. The expert system is developed using ESTA. The expert system in this thesis uses knowledge base from troubleshooting methods made by CISCO and experiences of network administrator at University of Widyatama Bandung. Result of Evaluation of the expert system using 6 artificial failures on 18 cases is shown in following table.Evaluation result shown that the expert system can be used to diagnose the cause of TCP/IP connection failure of personal computer connected to the network. text
