One of the most crucial needs nowdays is the need for energy which continues to increase significantly by the time. With the development of technology that has been achieved, all activities offshore in the form of exploration, exploitation, and distribution of oil and gas become possible. Distributions made to ensure the oil and gas exploitation reach every customer. There are two ways for distribution methods by tanker or by pipeline under the sea. Considering from effectiveness, the distribution through pipes becomes first choice. Underwater pipeline construction required a wide range of construction support equipment, one of them in the form of an unmanned vehicle that is able to reach out to the ocean floor, called ROV (Remotely Operated Vehicle). ROV has a role in all procurement activities of subsea pipeline installation, from initial survey through to maintenance inspection. The use of ROV is closely related to the science of geodetic and geomatic in the case of the vehicle positioning. All the data obtained are useless if the ROV has no location information. In addition, ROV positioning systems can also be applied in defining the location of an object on the seabed. There are many ways for defining position, for this case is the acoustic positioning system that utilizes sound waves with USBL (Ultra Short Baseline) method. The study was conducted based on the theory of acoustic positioning with data from ROV’s survey on gas pipeline installation planning in Tanjung Priok offshore. The analysis showed that the use of the method USBL is the most appropriate choice for defining ROV’s position. text
