Summary: | Quantitative collections of the bottom fauna and water analysis of seven stations which are located along Hickman Creek were made six times during the four seasons of one year, namely; once in winter and spring and twice in summer and fall. Comparison of the aquatic invertebrate communities in the polluted areas has been done qualitatively and quantitatively. The polluted one contained less variety of species, but there were much larger numbers of the species present. The nonpolluted stations had much more variety of species, but they did not have as many individuals per species. Pollution reduces the competition between species by removing the less tolerant forms. In general there was a successional change in the variety of species. A small stream contains less variety of organisms as compared to a bigger stream. Flooding seems to influence the number of the invertebrate obtained during the collection. In this study, fewer specimens were found immediately after floods than collections preceding them. |
