Chronic renal failure leads to end-stage renal desease, which is fatal if not properly managed. Corn silk (Maydis stigma) is used traditionally as an alternative therapy of renal failure. The aim of this research is to investigated the influence of corn silk aqueous extract on chronic renal failure rat model induced by gentamicin and piroxicam chronically for 21 days. The dose of gentamicin was given intraperitonially at 100 mg/kg body weight and the dose of piroxicam was given orally at 3.6 mg/kg body weight for 21 days. Corn silk extract at the dose of 76.2 mg/kg body weight was given orally on 8th day until 21th day. The serum level of creatinine and BUN, urine creatinine and urine albumin was measured to evaluated renal function. Results showed that renal failure rat model was performed after seven days administration of gentamicin and piroxicam. Administration of corn silk aqueous extract between 9th day and 15th day could decreased the serum level of creatinine significantly from 5.65+-3.66 mg/dL to 3.00+-1.34 mg/dL. Between 15th day and 17th day, the level of BUN decreased significantly from 136.41+-67.82 mg/dL to 71.46+-44.27 mg/dL. There was no significant difference of creatinine urine level and albumin urine level. It can be concluded that corn silk aqueous extract at the dose of 76.2 mg/kg body weight could improved recovery of renal function on chronic renal failure rat model. text
