The oil continued to spill for the next ten weeks. It released 400 barrels of crude oil per day which caused marine pollution. This phenomenon can be monitored by using satellite observation. Optical satellites, such as Terra and Aqua which are equipped with MODIS sensor in their system, took images from the Timor Sea daily. These images can help in monitoring, detecting and identifying the distribution of the oil spill continuously. The appearance of oil spills in optical image is usually shown in darker tone than its surrounding area. The methods used to identify oil spills in this MODIS image are visual interpretation, unsupervised classification and fluorescence index algorithm. The results of visual interpretation manually delineated as the area of oil spillage. The results showed unsupervised classification could not be used for identification of oil spills while the results of fluorescence index algorithm can discriminate oil spill region with its surrounding area. text |
