Description
Summary:The research objective is to study the relation of gas content and composition with coal genesis in Buanajaya, East Kalimantan. In details, this research is carried out to evaluate gas and coal characteristic and properties as source and reservoir, such as coal petrography characteristics (rank, maceral and mineral composition), gas content and its composition.
Core samples from drilling were placed in canister for Q1, Q2, dan Q3 gas content analysis, while the gas composition was analyzed in laboratorium along with vitrinite reflektance and maceral analysis and mineral composition. Proximate and ultimate data collected by Center for Geological Resources, are used as secondary data.
In general, methane and total gas content of coal in Buanajaya area are related to its coal genesis. Coal seam A, B, C, D, E, F, G and H in research area shows the trend of total gas content and methane which have positive correlations to vitrinite percentage and the reverse to vitrinite reflektance, mineral percentage, ash content and specific gravity. Based on plant origin, the coal was dominated by woody plant which contains less gas compared to herbaceous originated coal. Liptinite and inertinite maceral parameter could not be used as reference due to inadequate percentage (<2.5% and <2%, respectively). The mineral percentage, ash content, and specific gravity could be used as reference due to their consistency, where the mineral percentage has negative correlation to gas content.
The coal in research area is deposited in lower delta plain envinronment with swamp type changes from eutrophy to mesotrophy-oligotrophy while the rank is classified as lignite-subbituminous C, and higher rank for seam C, F, and G. Based on the coal rank, it is interpreted that almost methane was produced by biogenic process (biogenic/microbial methane). Vertical variation of gas content depends on roof-floor lithology and coal thickness. The variation is possibly controlled by geological structure and hydrodinamic of research area.
