Description
Summary:Satellite altimetry is a satellite whose main function is to observe the sea surface topography and ocean dynamics. However, this satellite has some weakness, such as the observation of sea level in coastal areas. The existence of land in coastal areas with a relatively shallow depth of water makes the quality of satellite altimetry observations is not as good as that on the open seas. This is not good because coastal areas have important roles for mankind.

To overcome the poor quality of satellite altimetry observations in coastal areas, research on coastal atimetry is necessary. One of the important studies is the waveform retracking or reprocessing of the reflected altimeter waves. In the process of waveform retracking, the identification of contaminated waveforms is the most important step.

In this final project the identification process is carried out to the waveforms of satellite Jason-2 (one of the satellites altimetry) passing over coastal areas of Sulawesi island, Indonesia. Based on the identification of the Jason-2 waveforms data ( 8 data sets consisting 5 passes of 2 cycle), it is obtained that at the distance of 0-5 km from the shoreline is the range where the contamination level is high. In addition, water depths less than 200 m is also a major cause for the contamination level of altimetry waveforms.
