Summary:The majority of pollution produced by oil spills happened on land, but public awareness and regulation concerning oil spills pollution pay greater focus on oil spills happening on sea. In handling oil spills that happened at sea, one important thing to do is to identify the location of the spills happened and to effectively identify these oil spills and its impact on sea zone after the spills, a right method is needed. Remote sensing using active microwave sensor from ENVISAT ASAR image can be used as one of the method to identify oil spills at sea. This research tried to determine the oil spills using single polarization ENVISAT ASAR (VV) by looking at the shape and the characteristic of oil spills and also by looking at its backscatter value of the shape at a particular oil spills zone. After the speckle noise reduction and rectification, the corrected image of ENVISAT ASAR is identified visually and analized using its backscattering coefficient. This research shows that the visual analysis using RADAR to identify oil spills can be done because its sensor superiority of being able to operate and acquisition independently without considering the weather and the day time. The backscattering coefficient analysis of the oil spills in this study results values between -18 dB to -23 dB as identified oil spills.
