Low Fe content in the local lateritic iron ore is the main reason why this ore is not able to be used as raw material for a steel making industry. Intensive efforts are needed in order to upgrade the quality of the ore that fulfil the requirement of raw material for the steel making industry. One of the ways in upgrading the lateritic iron ore is flotation process. This study was performed in order to increase Fe content in the lateritic iron ore. Reverse flotation with amine as collector was chosen as a method in increasing the Fe content in the ore. The optimum condition of the flotation was determined by changing the process variables i.e. pH of pulp, collector dosage, and impeller speed. The pH of 8, 9, 10, and 11 were used in the experiment whilst collector dosages of 250, 400, 550, and 750 gr/ton respectively were applied. Accordingly, impeller speeds of 900, 1000, 1100, and 1200 rpm respectively were used. From the results of the experiment and the analyses performed in this study, it was shown that maximum Fe content that can be reached was 40.74 % from initial Fe content in the feed of 38.85%; and the lowest SiO2 content in the concentrate was 4.48% from initial content of 10.59%. Optimum condition of the flotation process occurred at pH of 10, collector dosage of 550 gr/ton, and impeller speed of 1000 rpm. text |
