Summary:Spring is a mechanical component that is used in many applications. This component is usually made from high carbon steel wire. But the price of high carbon steel material is relatively expensive. In this project, low carbon steel is used to make the spring. The spring is treated with some treatment so it can reach the strength of high carbon steel spring. <br /> <br /> <br /> The first step of this project was to make spring from low carbon steel. It was followed by the preparation for carburizing compound, which was 90%wt coconut charcoal and 10%wt snail shell. It was then pack carburized. Three kinds of holding time were used, i.e. 10 minutes, 15 minutes and 20 minutes, followed by quench hardening process to increase the hardness of the spring surface. After quench hardening, tempering process is applied to the spring. Three kind of tempering temperature are used, which are 300oC, 350oC, 400oC. From this research, it was found that the spring constant is proportional to carburization time and inversely proportional to tempering temperature.
