HYDROLYSIS OF SUGARCANE BAGASSE BY ENDOGLUCANASE FROM BACILLUS MEGATERIUM RECOMBINANT

About 40% of sugarcane bagasse produced by the sugarcane mill has been used yet. As known, cellulose-rich-bagasse is a potential source of biomass that can be converted into bioethanol. In the present study, the ability of recombinant endoglucanase that has been investigated previously was employed...

As known, cellulose-rich-bagasse is a potential source of biomass that can be converted into bioethanol. In the present study, the ability of recombinant endoglucanase that has been investigated previously was employed to hydrolyze sugarcane bagasse. Stages of research were sugarcane bagasse treatments including steaming, drying, and lignin removal; enzyme preparation which including production and purification of the enzyme; sugarcane bagasse hydrolysis using endoglucanase; and analysis of hydrolysis products. The result showed that lignin content in the sugarcane bagasse was successfully lowered to 2.7%. Amount of reducing sugar obtained from hydrolyze 50 mg sugarcane bagasse using both crude extract (0.524 units/mL) and concentrated (0.177 units/mL) endoglucanases for 24 h at 37 oC was 0.876 and 1.283 μmol, respectively. Thus, it can be concluded that the recombinant endoglucanase can be applied for hydrolyzing sugarcane bagasse. text
