Summary: | Copper is one of non iron-based metals commonly used because of its mechanical properties and good electrical properties. Problems encountered in the use of metals in general, including copper is corrosion that can occur at room temperature or at elevated temperature. Research has been conducted to understand the characteristics of the corrosion occurred on copper, especially, for copper which undergoes temperature change due to the position of the specimen which is partially inside the furnace. The change in surface characteristics due to the temperature gradient on the outer side of the specimen is analyzed by using <br />

surface metallography, stereo microscope and macroscopic photographs. The change in weight and the corrosion rate on the specimen is calculated by weighing and using potentiodynamic test, respectively. Results show that there are differences in surface characteristics on the specimen which undergoes temperature gradient. The higher the temperature, the thicker the oxide layer formed will be. Moreover, it is showed that there will be more corroded surface because of the elevated temperature. Results from potentiodynamic test show that the corrosion rate will increase as a result of the increasing temperature. |
