SEPARATION OF FRUCTOSE AND SUCROSE MIXTURE BY MFI AND FAU ZEOLITES AS SEPARATING MATERIAL

Recent studies have shown that HPLC (High Pressure Liquid Cromatography) may separate saccharides selectively. In the present study, a column packed with MFI and/or FAU zeolite

was employed to study the separation of fructose and...

In the present study, a column packed with MFI and/or FAU zeolite

was employed to study the separation of fructose and sucrose mixture. MFI and FAU zeolite differ in topology (framework) and pore diameters. The accessible pore diameter of MFI zeolite is 5.50 A whereas FAU zeolite is 7.40 Å. Sucrose (alpha-D-glucopyranosyl-(1<->2)-beta-D-fructofuranoside) consists of two monosaccharides, glucose and fructose, therefore sucrose size is larger than fructose. The separation of fructose from its mixture in a column packed with zeolite was analyzed by UV-Vis spectroscopy. The analyses of fractions were carried

out based on direct reaction with 3,5-dinitrosalicylic acid for fructose and reaction of previously hydrolised sucrose with 3,5-dinitrosalicylic acid for sucrose, measured at 540 nm wavelength. The results show that MFI zeolite selectively separates fructose better than FAU zeolite due to its smaller pore aperture. The resolution (R) for separating fructose with sucrose ini ts mixture using MFI zeolite is 3.00 whereas using FAU zeolite is 0.45. The R is

a quantitative measure of a degree of separation of a component. text
