Summary:Guide vane is component in hydroelectric which controls the water flow rate into the water turbine. Guide vane failure can occur due to foreign object or water hammer phenomenon. Fail safe mechanism is one way to save from the ravages of guide vane during operation. Shear pin, a cheap material and easy to install (with a specific design) is used to avoid greater losses due to failure of the guide vane. <br /> <br /> <br /> Shear pin material must have certain mechanical properties, which should able to withstand the normal load conditions but fails when there is an overload. Material selection is done by modeling shear pin PLTM Sawidago, Poso, Central Sulawesi. <br /> <br /> <br /> Modeling is done by using the CFD Fluent and ANSYS software to obtain the mechanical properties limit shear pin. Various cases are modeled such as normal conditions, overload, and water hammer cases. Shear test and impact test various <br /> <br /> <br /> materials are also made to find a suitable shear pin material.
