Summary: | Cryogenic treatment or tempering is a process performed by soaking a work piece at a very low temperature usually using liquid nitrogen. This process is not widely applied in industries due to the contradiction on the effect of cryogenic tempering on the material properties. This research is inspired by that contradiction an aimed to investigate the effect of cryogenic treatment on the thermal stability of ASIS 4340 steel. A thermal stability testing setup was also developed in this research, this setup is designed to stimulate the effect of increasing temperature to the dimensional change of gun barrel during firing. Thermal stability is defined as the ability of specimen (steel) to resist changes in dimension, hardness and microstructure as its temperature changes. The effect of cryogenic tempering on microstructure and hardness was not detected in this research. However, it was proved that cryogenic treatment increase the thermal stability of AISI 4340 steel, in respect to the dimensional change. This lead to the conclusion that cryogenic tempering increases dimensional stability due to residual stress. |
