Description
Summary:A mechanical component needs a specified safety mechanism. The mechanism may be a fail-safe mechanism so the damage could be limited to the sacrificed component. An example of that mechanism is a shear pin, which is used in industrial mechanical components. For example is a release mechanism of an aircraft engine used on emergency landings, torsion limiter on a flocculator in a water treatment installation, gate portal holder, relief valve, and a load limiter on a subsea dredge. Failure modes on the shear pin could be differentiated based on its strain rate. Cracks could also influence the strength of the shear pin. An analysis of a shear pin in a flocculator is used to understand the application and loading of a shear pin.

Testing with two types of shear pin, a double notched pin and a DIN 1482 pin, with two different strain rate, shows the failure phenomena that occurs on a shear pin. Dimension, configuration, and the material of shear pin could change the pin’s characteristic and failure.
