Description
Summary:electrically by means of electroplating, which the main use is for decorative application. In decorative application, color’s uniformity and consistency of the deposited brass become priority. The color of the deposited brass is determined by the proportion of Cu and Zn in it. This experiment is conducted to observe the effect of the parameters employed to the properties of deposited brass, it’s composition and color. The parameters in this

experiment are voltage(1, 2, 3, 4, & 5V), ammonia(10 & 20 ml), and sodium hydroxide(10 & 20 g). The duration of brass electroplating in this experiment is 1 minute. The process with ammonia and sodium hydroxide addition are conducted on

2V. The process use electrolyte solution(cyanide base) made from zonax brass salt product of Macdermid, brass anode (70Cu-30Zn), and steel that nickel plated previously, as the specimen. EDS is used to quantify composition of the deposited brass.

Composition measurement with EDS of 1V and 2V specimen process show that the brass layer produced has composition that close to 80Cu-20Zn whereas the 3, 4, 5 V process produced brass layer which consist of 60Cu-40Zn approximately. Cu content is decline because the rate of other reaction at the cathode surface, such as zinc reduction and hydrogen evolution, is increasing with the raising of voltage. All of the brass layers deposited has similar yellowish color. Process with ammonia addition

produced brass layer which has composition close to 50Cu-50Zn with whitish color. Composition measurement of brass layer resulted from process with sodium hydoxide addition, indicates that Zn content is increase so that composition of the brass is close to 50Cu-50Zn with whitish colour. The increase of Zn content is resulted from the raising of hydroxil ion that can form complex compound with Zn,Zn(OH)4

2-, in the solution because amonia and NaOH addition to the solution. This complex makes Zn deposited more easily because low cathodic polarization. An experiment is needed to observe whether the composition of the deposited brass is influenced by the anode’s composition considering that anode is the supplier of metal ions in the solution.
