Summary: | Projectile material is currently dominated by lead (Pb). Lead is one of heavy metal which can be enviromental pollutants. The projectile impact, such as richochet and over-penetration problem, is difficult to control. Frangible projectile then was developed to address the lack of lead projectiles. Frangibility is the nature of the frangible projectile which is defined as the ability to be broken after receiving the load. The making of frangible projectile is mostly done by the powder metallurgy process. The condition during the manufacturing process, the composition of the constituent frangible projectile, and the characteristics used will greatly influence the impact behavior of this type of projectile. The making of frangible projectile is done through cold compaction process in iron powder (size < 210 μm) with a compaction pressure of 800 MPa. After that, the sintering process at a temperature of 500 oC and 750 oC for an hour in air environment is done. Projectile test is done by the diametral compression test and drop weight test. The sintering process at 750 oC temperature increases the value of indirect tensile strength of 13,91 MPa (without sintering process) up to 28,45 MPa. Increased loading energy will increase the percentage of projectile mass <br />

transformed into powder. Frangibility can be defined as the ability of frangible projectile to be broken into fragments of the size which is the same as the size of the initial powder used. |
